This year, Bankers Petroleum Albania proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary, marking two decades since the reactivation of the Patos-Marinza oilfield, the largest onshore oil field in Europe. Since 2004, Bankers has transformed this historic oilfield into a modern and thriving operation, reaching a peak production of 20,000 barrels per day.
In an interview, Chris Thompson, Deputy General Director, reflected on this remarkable journey: “We focused on improving efficiency and sustainability. By introducing advanced horizontal drilling, we not only increased production but also extended the life of the oilfield.”
Bankers Petroleum has invested over $4 billion into the development of Patos-Marinza, while also paying $1 billion in taxes, directly benefiting the Albanian economy. The company has also dedicated $10 million to community projects, supporting local schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. With over 500 employees, Bankers is one of the largest employers in the country.
The company is also committed to environmental care, investing in an oil waste treatment plant to minimize ecological impact. “Bankers has transformed the oil industry in Albania,” said CEO Huanqin Xiao. “Our use of advanced technologies, including PCP pumps, polymer injection, and thermal drilling, has revitalized the oilfield and improved recovery rates.”
Looking ahead, Bankers Petroleum Albania plans to focus on innovation and sustainability, with new technologies like thermal injection and mud treatment poised to further enhance the production at Patos-Marinza, positioning it as a unique leader in the oil industry.
